More about Shades: Shades is a coeducational, entirely undergraduate run non-profit organization founded in 1988 to celebrate music of the African Diaspora and the African-American tradition. We sing everything from traditional spirituals and folk songs to jazz and R&B. A central aspect of our mission is to educate about the music we sing and tradition we celebrate, and we frequently come to schools to share our music as well as discuss our experiences as Yale students.

It is our objective to offer a unique, musically excellent, and spiritually enriching performance experience to audiences at Yale University and beyond. In addition to mastering the style of our music, we develop an appreciation of its history and roots in order to educate audiences about our music’s lineage. Since its founding, the group has traveled globally to locations as far as Costa Rica, Ireland, and Japan; among the group’s many experiences are performing at the White House, singing backup for Lenny Kravitz, and singing for the enthronement ceremony of Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation in Phokeng, South Africa for an audience of over 20,000 – including former President Nelson Mandela and the royal family of Botswana.
